IPL Photofacial for Sun Spots and Uneven Skin Tone

Sun spots, redness, and uneven tone

Years of sun exposure leave visible marks — dark spots, freckles, redness, and uneven pigmentation. IPL Photofacial is one of the established treatments for these concerns, and we offer it at our Corona location starting at $495 per session.

What IPL is

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Unlike a laser, which emits a single wavelength, IPL emits a broad spectrum. That energy is absorbed by melanin in pigmented spots and by hemoglobin in visible vessels, causing those targets to break down and clear over the following weeks.

It is not a resurfacing treatment and does not remove the outer layer of skin. It works on colour rather than texture.

What it treats well

  • Sun spots and age spots
  • Freckles and hyperpigmentation
  • Redness and mild rosacea
  • Broken capillaries
  • Early photoaging

It is less effective for deep wrinkles, significant skin laxity, or textural concerns such as scarring — those respond better to other treatments. If your concern is overall skin quality rather than specific marks, this comparison with Laser Genesis may help you decide.

What it feels like

Most people describe quick snaps or warm flashes, similar to a rubber band against the skin. No anesthesia is needed. Sessions run 20 to 30 minutes depending on the area.

Afterward

Expect some redness and mild swelling, generally resolving within a few hours to a few days. Treated pigment typically darkens over the first day or two before flaking away across the following week. That is the normal course, not a complication.

Sun avoidance before and after treatment matters, and daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential — both for results and to avoid pigment changes.

How many sessions

Most patients have up to three sessions spaced about four weeks apart. Milder concerns sometimes respond well to one. More extensive pigmentation generally needs the full series.

IPL treats existing pigmentation; it does not prevent new sun damage. Without sun protection, spots recur.

Who it is not for

IPL is generally not appropriate for darker skin tones. The broad-spectrum light also targets melanin in surrounding skin, which creates a risk of burns and post-inflammatory pigment changes. This is a safety limitation rather than a preference, and we will tell you honestly if it applies to you.

It is also generally avoided during pregnancy, on recently tanned skin, on active infections in the treatment area, and with certain photosensitizing medications. A consultation lets us review this properly.
