Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect After Six Sessions
Is it worth it?
If you are spending time and money on waxing or shaving every few weeks, laser hair removal is worth understanding properly — including what it does and does not achieve.
The accurate term is permanent hair reduction, not removal. That is the language the FDA uses for cleared devices, and it reflects what actually happens: a substantial and lasting decrease in the number and thickness of hairs, rather than complete elimination. Most patients need occasional maintenance sessions afterward.
The Motus AY system
We use the Motus AY. Two things distinguish it.
Comfort. Moveo technology distributes energy more evenly across the treatment area, which most patients find considerably more comfortable than older systems. Comfort is subjective, but the difference is consistently reported.
Skin tone range. The system offers both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths. The Nd:YAG in particular can be used safely on darker skin tones that alexandrite-only systems could not treat without risk of burns or pigment change.
Treatment times are short, even for larger areas.
What to expect across a series
Sessions 1–2: treated hairs shed over the following one to three weeks. Some areas may look clearer, though it is early to judge.
Sessions 3–4: most patients notice reduced density and slower regrowth. Remaining hairs often come back finer and lighter.
Sessions 5–6: this is where the difference is usually clear. Published studies of alexandrite and Nd:YAG systems generally report substantial reduction after a full series, though the figures vary widely between studies and between individuals. Hair colour, hormone status, treatment area, and adherence to the schedule all affect the outcome.
Why several sessions are needed
Hair grows in cycles, and laser energy only affects follicles in the active growth phase. Because hairs are not synchronized, sessions spaced several weeks apart are needed to catch each follicle during that window.
Where it works less well
Laser hair removal relies on pigment in the hair to absorb the energy. It is not effective on white, grey, or very light blonde hair, and results on red hair are limited. Hormonal conditions such as PCOS can drive continued growth and may require ongoing maintenance.

Laser hair removal produces permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal, and maintenance sessions are typically needed. It is not effective on white, grey, or very light hair and results on red hair are limited. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Avoid sun exposure before and after sessions. A consultation is recommended prior to treatment.
