Ultrasonic Cavitation: How It Works and How Many Sessions to Expect
What ultrasonic cavitation is
Ultrasonic cavitation is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses low-frequency ultrasound applied to the skin over an area of localized fat. We offer it at our Corona location for $399 per session.
It requires no anesthesia, no incisions, and no downtime. Patients return to normal activity immediately.
How it is understood to work
A handheld device delivers ultrasonic waves through the skin toward the subcutaneous fat layer. The proposed mechanism is that these waves create pressure changes within the fat layer that disrupt fat cell membranes, releasing their contents to be cleared through the lymphatic system.
It is worth being straightforward here: the published evidence for ultrasonic cavitation is more limited than the marketing around it generally suggests. Studies report modest reductions in circumference measurements, but they are typically small, short in duration, and vary considerably in device and protocol. Results differ substantially between individuals, and some patients see little change.
What it is not
This is not a weight loss treatment and it is not a substitute for diet and exercise. It is intended for localized areas of fat in patients who are already near their target weight.
It is also not liposuction. The degree of change is considerably smaller, and anyone promising comparable results is overstating it.
Areas treated
Abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms, back, and buttocks.
How many sessions
Most protocols involve eight to twelve sessions, scheduled two to three times per week. Any change generally develops across the full course rather than after one or two sessions.
Safety and suitability
The treatment is generally well tolerated. Reported effects include temporary redness, warmth, and mild bruising in the treated area.
It is not appropriate for everyone. It is generally avoided in pregnancy, and in patients with certain liver or kidney conditions, pacemakers or implanted electronic devices, or in areas with active skin infection. A consultation is required so we can review your history first.
We recommend staying well hydrated before and after sessions.
